Let's face it, sometimes we do not expect it, but it can happen that someone close to us is doing something which is hurting us or our loved ones. And although we suspect it, we cannot confront them or take further steps because we don't have proof.
Having a hidden camera will change all this.
It happens all too often that parents have no choice but to leave their kids in the care of a family member or a nanny and the child's behaviour changes without any apparent reason - could it be that the nanny is hurting the child or worse?
Along these lines there can be other worrying questions...
- Is it possible that your employees have banded together and are stealing from you?
- Could it be that your spouse is having an affair?
Its a sad part of life but most of the time the saying "where there is smoke there is fire" is very true.

The bait...
About two months ago we had a steel manufacturing company approach us because they suspected the employees of pilfering some of the products. We set up the cameras in very inconspicuous places and once the trap was set the company owners sat and waited for the weekend when most of the activity took place.Posing as a security company we set up the following system:
- Two smoke detector cameras (these cameras look just like smoke detectors) and two alarm PIR cameras (they look like alarm "eye" detectors). Obviously this means that these cameras are well hidden so the criminals carry on with their activities without knowing that they are being watched and recorded for future evidence.
- We also placed two pin-hole cameras outside high up on telephone poles so we could see what was being loaded.
- These cameras are full colour with excellent picture quality during day and low light conditions. However they do need a bit of light. The reason is that none of the cameras are fitted with infra red night vision LED's required to illuminate the target since this would obviously alert potential criminals to the existence & location of such devices.
- The pinhole cameras either come with or without audio. In this case the client chose full audio as he wanted to hear what was being said which is also great for any proof that may be needed in court.
- We also set up a Digital Video recorder, so the client could record the action and have proof in computer format (which can be later placed on CD).
Broadband connection
The cameras are accessible via broadband Internet connection for remote viewing purposes. The client had an ADSL with a Telkom Mega 100 router. The cost of an ADSL line these days is less than R500 per month for 4096kbps (if you are not very technically minded, this is an extremely fast connection to the Internet).
Busted!
To our client's astonishment, the thieves struck on Friday evening. All of them were employees of the firm and where aided by the security guard who conveniently forgot to sign them in.
The amount they stole in product was worth a staggering
R400 000. And this had been going on at least once a month for the past three months. Fortunately the company was liquid enough to carry the loss.
The R16 000 Rand they spent on the security cameras was a drop in a bucket compared to the savings they were able to get after having the police apprehend the thieves. Obviously the fee will vary depending on your specific situation and needs.
